The Old Print Works

The Old Print Works is an intact grade 2 listed Edwardian factory building, that housed J. T. Butcher and Co Transfers, which used litho and silk screen printing methods from 1896.

The building now houses many of the creative community within Balsall Heath in Birmingham, and still contains the traditional Edwardian factory features and has some really interesting spaces!  There are various independent businesses located around The Old Print Works, such as pottery businesses, and bike shops.

Room 1 - Is a large communal and function area, surrounded by small businesses, it has a large sloped ceiling, and an external brick wall on one side, with wooden floors.  The space is rather live and reverberant.

Room 2 - Is a smaller office style space.  This office is obviously not in normal use, and is used mainly for storage.  It has a very vintage vibe, with lots of wood panelling, with half laminate floor and half carpet.  The area has a significant amount of insulation piled in one side for storage, therefore this space has a rather 'intimate' sound.

Room 3 - A large warehouse space, with concrete floors, and bare walls.  The space houses various bikes, and metal sculptures.  This results in a very 'metallic' and almost plate reverb type sound.

Room 4 - This is another large space, and is the edge of the main fire escape and loading entrance for the building, constructed mainly of concrete.  This has a pottery business located right next to it, which results in some very interesting diffusion.

Room 5 - This is a small hallway and entrance room, the room is rather bare, however due to the staircase overhead, it creates an interesting shaped space, resulting in a small but lively reverberation.
